Computed Tomography Imaging: Safety & Image Quality

The focus of this Education Day is on Computed Tomography Imaging Safety & Image Quality; it includes:
1. To be able to understand the basic fundamentals of CT and its evolution.
2. Understand the types of contrast media used in CT
3. Analyze adverse reactions and contraindications to contrast media used in CT.
4. Understand the CT dose as compared to other diagnostic studies
5. Review the radiation protection principles used in CT.
6. Understand the common artifacts in CT affecting image quality.
7. Learn trauma imaging protocols in CT (a case study).

Breast Density: Why It Matters

Not only has breast density long been known to mask breast cancer on mammography, it is also an independent risk factor for the development of breast cancer. To date, more than half of the states in the US have passed legislation requiring patients be provided with some level of breast density information after undergoing mammography. The increasing awareness about breast density is necessitating new conversations between patients and their healthcare providers. This course will educate healthcare professionals about breast density, its associated risks, as well as indications and use of supplemental screening with ultrasound, MRI, and discussion of nuclear medicine methods.

Breast Anatomy & Pathology

This course is ASRT approved for 8 category A CE credits. Knowledge of breast anatomy is fundamental to a mammographer’s skill set and important in creating quality mammographic projections. Written as an introductory course to breast anatomy and mammography, this course provides the radiographer with a review of both male and female breast anatomy; basic mammographic concepts such as patient communication, compression, localization of breast lesions, and reporting terminology; and a review of benign, malignant, and high risk breast conditions and pathologic correlations. This course is directly applicable towards the initial 40 total hours of training in mammography required by the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) and covers breast anatomy and physiology.

With permission from the United States CDC for the use of their materials, we have developed a course that examines how tobacco smoke causes disease. This report covers the physiological processes by which nicotine induces addiction, toxicity, genetic mutation, and cancer (as well as several other diseases). Myocardial Blood Flow Quantification with PET

Our work on quantification of myocardial blood flow using rubidium-82 (82Rb) positron emission tomography (PET) is poised to provide accurate and precise clinical information for effective patient management. Modern technology has enabled us to substantially reduce the cost of this exams, reduce radiation exposures, and drive new applications. The lessons we learnt and the technologies we developed are now being translated to clinics around the world through industry partnerships. This talk will introduce our cutting edge 82Rb PET technology what we have done to make it more widely available.

Objectives:
– Become familiar with the benefits of myocardial blood flow quantification over traditional modalities.
– Understand why 82Rb PET is likely to make myocardial blood flow quantification more widely available.
– Understand the implications of these technologies for the nuclear medicine technologist.
