X-Ray Safety Officer (XSO)

Trauma Radiography – Clinical Techniques

Recognition of the pathological processes present in your images is key to ensuring a successful imaging exam for trauma radiography. This seminar will introduce the methods and techniques to overcome non-routine challenges in diagnostic radiology. A major focus will be the inter-relationship of the various imaging modalities and how they clinically complement each other with imaging trauma patients. Select radiographic positions will be discussed as to clinical expectations in order to maximize diagnostic yield in an ALARA fashion and to give the participant a radiologist’s perspective as to the challenges in image interpretation. The speaker will be utilizing a case-based approach in the delivery of these concepts.

XSO Refresher

This refresher course is designed to help employers with industrial or medical X-Ray equipment across Canada to continue satisfying their regulatory obligations.
The regulators, both federal and provincial, expect that a qualified person will be designated as an X-Ray Safety Officer by the employer. The best way to maintain such qualifications is to continue updating existing knowledge. We recommend that a refresher course be taken every 3 years to keep up-to-date with all changes and requirements.

Digital Mammography – Mastering the Technique

The Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) requires all new and experienced mammographers to receive a minimum of 8 hours of training/education in a new mammographic modality. Due to its various benefits to patients and healthcare providers alike, full field digital mammography (FFDM) is the new modality of choice. This course is specifically intended for those technologists with experience in the field, but no formal training in digital mammography.

Breast Implants & Quality Assurance in Mammography

Women with breast implants require additional screening views and encounter various types of complications unique to their implants. This course is ASRT approved for 8.5 category A CE credits and provides an overview of the regulatory history and types of breast implants approved for use in the United States, surgical procedures used for implantation, and common complications and adverse effects related to breast implants as well quality control principles, another important aspect of breast imaging and a critical step in ensuring quality images and patient care. This course addresses specifically two topics, breast implants and quality assurance/control, mandated by the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) for initial training in mammography.

Radiology 101

This course gives a working knowledge of the basic principals and practice of medical imaging. It aids in the understanding of diagnostic radiographic images and the role that imaging plays in disease diagnosis. Each chapter describes normal and abnormal findings, and correlations of the disease in other modalities. Introduction to Research

This course is an introduction to research for allied health professionals. It explains why research is important in allied health and details different types of research. It provides a basic understanding of research principles, designs and processes, enabling the beginning researcher to design a simple research study from start to finish, and apply the results to improving clinical practice.

After course completion, health professionals should be able to focus their research, whether of a quantitative or qualitative type, develop a hypothesis or aim statement, perform a literature review, and design data collection and data analysis strategies for the specific types of research studies. Ethical concerns in research and the use of research ethics boards will be discussed. Health professionals will learn how to compile results from acquired research data sets and derive conclusions. Dissemination techniques, such as how to write up research, for scientific journal publication, conference presentation, or in poster format, will also be reviewed. Financial support is an integral component of research; approaches to funding will also be included in the course.

Multi-Modality Imaging of the Small Bowel

This presentation will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of imaging techniques commonly used for the investigation of small bowel pathologies such as Crohn’s Disease and small bowel bleeding. Modalities such as plain film, barium studies, CT and MR enterography will be explored, with technical consideration of elements such as radiation dose, imaging during pregnancy and the use of oral contrast agents.
