This course is ASRT approved for 6 category A CE credits and reviews the biologic effects of ionizing radiation; basic technological elements in photostimulable phosphor systems, charge-coupled devices, and complementary metal oxide semi-conductor systems as well as digital detectors and the digital image acquisition chain; and radiation protection principles essential to the digital imaging process. Concepts such as the types and interactions of radiation with matter, radiation exposure models, elements and characteristics of a digital image, exposure selection for pediatric patients, and the justification and optimization of radiation dose are discussed. The course highlights ALARA principles throughout the universal digital imaging process.
