Learning Objectives:
Kidney transplantation is the most successful way to save a person’s life after they develop end stage kidney failure. The waitlist for patients in Canada requiring a kidney transplant continues to rise and has increased 15% since 2007. On average, recipients will wait 4 years for a living donor kidney and up to 8 years for a cadaver kidney.
Those who make the decision to donate a kidney can live a very normal life with only one remaining kidney. Although it can be a very rewarding experience, it also presents its own unique set of risks and challenges.
The goal in sharing this personal journey as a kidney donor is to help educate and inspire others to consider giving someone else this precious gift of life.
