1) Autistic Children and their Parents’ Experience of Diagnostic Imaging
Presenter: Dr. Jane Harvey-Lloyd, Associate Professor, University of Leeds
Learning Objectives:
– Explore the factors which influenced the experiences of autistic children and their parents
– Discuss the lessons learned and recommend strategies to be developed to enhance patient-centered care for children with autism attending an imaging department
2) How to achieve high-quality medical imaging and a great patient & family experience in pediatric populations
Presenters:
Christine Hill, MRT(T), MHM Clinical Director, Diagnostic & Interventional Radiology, Hospital for Sick Children
Nancy Ribeiro, BSc., MRT(N), RSO Team Lead/Radiation Safety Officer Nuclear Medicine, PET/CT and MIBG Therapy, Hospital for Sick Children
Dana Kondo, MSc, CCLS, Hospital for Sick Children
This session will provide participants with a better understanding of techniques and strategies employed when imaging children. The goal is to ensure optimal care for patients and their families while obtaining high quality images and a more positive experience for all involved. Implementation of pediatric-focused models of care will improve patient and family satisfaction, promote cooperation, and consequently decrease the need for pharmacological interventions and repeat imaging.
Learning Objectives:
– Appreciate the specialized training required when working with the pediatric patient population.
– Discuss challenges and considerations when imaging children vs adults. This includes, but is not limited to, employing the use of pediatric imaging protocols and the application of the ALARA principle and radiation protection as it relates to children and their families.
– Identify practical strategies that improve the care for pediatric patients and their families, including scheduling requirements, immobilization techniques, the child and family-centered care model, child friendly waiting areas and the requirement for an ongoing collaboration with Child Life Specialists.
