The Evolution of CT Technology – Improving Benefit vs. Risk

The Evolution of CT Technology – Improving Benefit vs. Risk

No continuing education / Category A credit assigned to this presentation.

Presenter: Larry Filipow, PhD

Learning Objectives:
This presentation will review the technological evolution of CT scanners since the first EMI scanner that debuted in 1972. This technical evolution will be correlated to the increase in clinical utility and information with decrease in patient dose over the years. The concept of Benefit/Risk Ratio in CT utilization will be discussed, showing how this has consequently dramatically changed.

The attendee will become familiar with the many components of a CT scanner and how each has evolved to contribute to the very fast, extremely low dose machines used today. The attendee will also come away with an understanding of the differences between perceived, relative, and actual radiation dose risk, and how to maximize benefit to risk in CT scanning.
