The Opioid Crisis in Alberta

The Opioid Crisis in Alberta

No continuing education / Category A credit assigned to this presentation.

Presenter: Karine Meador, MD, CCFP, DABAM

Learning Objectives:
With the increasingly toxic drug market and an estimated 4000 opioid overdose deaths across Canada in 2017, the opioid crisis is not something that any health care provider can choose to ignore. This is especially true given that health care remains an important touch point for people who use opioids with Alberta data showing that over half of people who died of an overdose, in the 30 days prior to their fatal overdose, accessed some form of health care2. This presentation will seek to explore the following:
1- What is a substance use disorder and how do we approach substance use as a society?
2- What is unique about opioid use and how are opioids affecting our province specifically?
3- What are the evidence-based interventions that we can use to address the opioid crisis?
