The safety hazards and risks associated with MRI are very different from those typically associated with ionizing radiation. This short course covers the main hazards associated with an MRI environment within a radiation therapy department and how to identify and manage potential risks for personnel and patients.

Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss common regulations and guidelines pertaining to safe staffing, education and layout of an MRI environment
  • Identify and minimize potential risks associated with the main safety hazards of working in an MRI environment associated with the static field, RF coils and gradient coils for personnel and patients
  • Explain the standards relating to MRI safety labelling and the scanning of devices and implants
  • Outline the importance of MRI screening for personnel and patients
  • Discuss the management of MRI-related emergencies including medical emergencies and quench
  • Understand some special considerations for working in an MRI environment in radiation therapy
